The Africa Cup of Nations

The Confederation of African Football was founded in 1957, and the first Africa Cup of Nations was played that same year in Sudan, with just three teams. The tournament grew with African football, to 16 teams in 1996 and 24 in 2019. In 2013 it moved to odd-numbered years, away from the World Cup calendar.

Egypt have won it more often than any other nation, and Cameroon, Ghana, Nigeria and Ivory Coast have each won it several times. North Africa has a proud record too, with titles for Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia as well as Egypt. It is usually played in January and February, so European clubs lose their African stars for weeks in mid-season.

What the AFCON quiz asks

The questions run from the first final in 1957 to the 2023 edition, played in early 2024. Finals and semi-finals lead the way, with famous shootouts, comebacks and the matches that fans of Egypt, Morocco, Algeria and Tunisia remember best.

  • Which match? Name the final or knockout game from the score, the host city and a scorer.
  • Guess the year: type the edition in which a final or a famous result happened.
  • Guess the score: set it after 90 minutes, or after extra time when asked.
  • Who scored? Name the player behind a winning goal in a final or a semi-final.
  • Who advanced? Pick the team that went through after a draw, often on penalties.

How the daily AFCON quiz works

A new AFCON five opens every day at 00:00 UTC: two easy questions, two medium and one hard. You have 25 seconds for each, and you can change your mind until you lock your answer. Every correct answer earns 200 points, up to 1,000 a day, with total answer time breaking ties instead of a speed bonus. Only your first attempt is ranked on the AFCON leaderboard, and each correct answer also earns rank points that lift you from Bronze toward Legend. Practice and Memory lane let you keep playing without touching the rankings.
