A short history of the Euros

The European Championship was the idea of Henri Delaunay, UEFA's first general secretary, and its trophy carries his name. The first final tournament was played in 1960, with four teams, under the name European Nations' Cup. The finals grew to eight teams in 1980, 16 in 1996 and 24 in 2016.

Fans love the Euros for surprises as much as for favourites: smaller nations that went all the way, holders who went out early, finals settled by a golden goal or a shootout. Euro 2020 was postponed by a year and played in cities across the continent. Spain have won the title more often than any other nation.

What the Euros quiz asks

The questions cover the whole history of the tournament, from the four-team finals of the 1960s to Euro 2024. You will find finals and semi-finals, hat-tricks, penalty shootouts, golden and silver goals, and the upsets that defined a summer.

  • Which match? Name the fixture from the score, the host city and the scorers.
  • Guess the year: type the year of the Euro in which a result happened.
  • Guess the score: set it after 90 minutes, or after extra time when asked.
  • Who scored? Name the player behind a decisive goal in a knockout game.
  • Who advanced? Pick the team that went through after a draw, often on penalties.

How the daily Euros quiz works

Each day at 00:00 UTC the Euros pack opens a new five, from two easy questions to one hard. You have 25 seconds per question and can change your pick until you lock it. Correct answers are worth 200 points, so a perfect day scores 1,000; there is no speed bonus, and equal scores are split by total answer time. Your first attempt is ranked on the Euros leaderboard for the day, and players get one of several quizzes, so passing answers around will not help. Practice and Memory lane are unranked.
