From the European Cup to the Champions League

UEFA launched the European Champion Clubs' Cup in 1955, on an idea from the French paper L'Équipe. For decades it was a knockout competition for national champions, and Real Madrid won the first five finals. In 1992 it became the Champions League, with a group stage and an anthem adapted from Handel. Since 2024–25 a single league phase of 36 clubs has replaced the groups.

Fans remember it for the nights when a tie turns: a late winner, a comeback from three goals down, a shootout under the lights. It is also where great club sides have proved themselves, from Ajax and Bayern Munich in the 1970s to the Barcelona and Real Madrid teams of this century. Real Madrid have won it more often than any other club.

What the Champions League quiz asks

The questions span seven decades, from the European Cup's early finals to the 2025 final. Finals lead the way, joined by semi-finals, quarter-finals, famous comebacks and the players from North Africa and the Middle East who shone on those nights.

  • Which match? Name the final or tie from the score, the city and a scorer or two.
  • Guess the year: type the calendar year of a final or a famous European night.
  • Guess the score: set the result of a final or a big knockout game.
  • Who scored? Name the player behind a decisive goal in a final or a semi-final.
  • Who advanced? Pick the side that went through after a tie finished level on aggregate.

How the daily Champions League quiz works

Every day at 00:00 UTC the pack deals a fresh five: two easy questions, two medium and one hard. Each question gives you 25 seconds, and nothing is final until you lock your answer. Correct answers earn 200 points each, up to 1,000 a day, and ties are split by total answer time rather than a speed bonus. Your first attempt is the one that counts on the Champions League leaderboard, and your best five days of the week make your weekly total. Practice and Memory lane never touch the rankings.
