The story of La Liga

Spain's national league kicked off in 1929 with ten clubs, and Barcelona were its first champions. Real Madrid, Barcelona and Athletic Bilbao have never been relegated from the top flight. Real Madrid have won the title more often than anyone, with Barcelona next, and Atlético Madrid, Valencia, Real Sociedad and Sevilla have all been champions too.

El Clásico between Real Madrid and Barcelona is followed far beyond Spain, and the Madrid derby has a fierce history of its own. La Liga was also the stage for the long rivalry between Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, who between them set scoring records that still stand.

What the La Liga quiz asks

The questions cover La Liga from the early 1990s to 2025, with Copa del Rey ties and a Spanish Super Cup semi-final as well. Expect Clásicos and Madrid derbies, titles decided on the final day, milestones for Messi and Ronaldo, teenage scorers and moments for Moroccan internationals.

  • Which match? Name the fixture from the score, the stadium and the scorers.
  • Guess the year: type the calendar year, or the year a season ended.
  • Guess the score: set the full-time result of a Clásico, a derby or a goal fest.
  • Who scored? Name the player behind a stoppage-time winner or a record-breaking goal.
  • Who advanced? Pick the team that went through in a cup tie.
